Governor Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed March 11-15, 2024, the first ever Civic Learning Week in Michigan. To celebrate this and National Civic Learning Week, The Levin Center for Oversight and Democracy, along with its partners at the MiCivics Coalition, hosted the second annual Michigan Civic Education Summit. This year’s theme is “Cultivating Civic Champions: Advancing Civic Curiosity and Joy.” The event, a response to a 2022 listening tour of civics educators in the state, featured fourteen sessions, three coalition working groups, and eleven conference presenters.
Following the keynote presentation given by former State Senator Adam Hollier and James Liggens Jr., participants broke out into conference sessions covering a variety of civics topics presented by The American Bar Association, the National Constitution Center, the Upshur Center for Civic Education at Eastern Michigan University, the Levin Center, Retro Report, the Michigan Supreme Court Learning Center, the Michigan Department of Education, Detroit Area Youth Uniting Michigan (DAYUM), the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, the Michigan Secretary of State, the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation, My School Votes, Detroit Public TV, and the Michigan Center for Civic Education. Participants expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to hear from such a wide array of civics organizations and colleagues.
